Students kiss their cell phones goodbye…

The decision has apparently already been made by Spokane schools to ban most cell phone use by students, with the exceptions of before and after school and their lunch breaks. Normally I would not raise an eyebrow, simply because we send our students to school to learn, not make phone calls or text messages to their friends and family. I am aghast at public education has changed since the days long ago when I went to school.

Predictably enough, this decision has not been welcomed with open arms, either by the students or, in some cases, the parents themselves.

The penalties for students ignoring or breaking this rule are what I would expect: the school will seize the cell phones, surrendering it only to the parents. Now there might be a novel way to get parents involved in their children’s education. Seizure of noodkum’s cell phone for breaking the rules means the parents have to show up at the school to pick up the student’s cell phones. At least once.

Nokia unveils E72 QWERTY smartphone for business

For the first time, users will be able to set up instant messaging accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the homescreen, allowing connection to Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, among others.

Nokia unveiled today its E72 full-QWERTY smartphone, packing e-mail, instant messaging, a 5-megapixel camera and a standard 3.5mm audio jack into a slim shell.

“Swift, slim and resourceful” are the words Nokia is using to market the E72, which is the successor to its popular E71 smartphone, the company’s best-selling QWERTY device to date.

Nokia also says it’s made “performance improvements,” most notably faster internet up- and downlink speeds. The device also features A-GPS and compass with integrated maps, active noise cancellation and a one-button flashlight/torch feature.

The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of €350 (or approx. $485) before taxes and subsidies.

Will Motorola make T-Mobile's next Google Android phone?

Those of us in the gadget biz feel a little bad for Motorola.

After a huge hit with the Razr, the company just hasn’t seemed to grasp the attention of the fickle U.S. consumer. No matter how many zany handsets the company produces, it remains (along with Nokia) as the has-beens of the U.S. mobile world. The growing popularity of the smartphone only served to underline this.

At this point I’m not willing to guess as to which design cues on this image indicate Motorola influence (rather than HTC, Apple, RIM or Palm), but I am willing to say this: if Motorola hops on the rapidly accelerating Google Android train with gusto, the battle for smartphone glory will become a full-scale war.

But a possible rebirth may be coming. BuyGeniusReport is saying that the successor to the HTC-manufactured T-Mobile G1 smartphone — still the only mobile handset in the wild running Google Android, though not for long — may actually be made by Motorola.

Wireless churn wars: T-Mobile lags the pack

T-Mobile’s prepaid churn rate was 2.3 percent in the first quarter, dropping it to last place among the leading wireless carriers.

T-Mobile still managed to add 415,000 net customers in the quarter. The company argues that it is aggressively rolling out its 3G network and lining up devices to attract more customers.
Total revenue for T-Mobile was $5.4 billion in the first quarter, up from $5.19 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $322 million, down from $462 million a year ago. Average revenue per user was $48, down from $51 a year ago.
T-Mobile said its churn rate increase was “impacted by competitive intensity.” Translation: Any bump that T-Mobile received from devices like the G1 has evaporated.

With all the wireless carrier earnings complete here is a look the churn standings

Miss that syncing feeling? App gives the iPhone two-way syncing

The Missing Sync enables iPhone and iPod Touch users to synchronize Mac-based data that neither of these can devices ordinarily synchronize with, including notes, documents, and tasks. Conversely, the software also lets you log your mobile device's text messages and call history on a Mac. A "Migration Assistant" feature even allows you to transfer contacts and other data from a different smartphone to the iPhone--a boon if you're deeply invested in another mobile platform and decide to switch to iPhone.

The biggest change in The Missing Sync's 2.0 release is "true, two-way syncing of notes, tasks, and documents" between either of Apple's handheld devices and a Mac via Wi-Fi, according to Mark/Space.

Nokia Unveils"Green:Handset Design

Nokia is going green.

The No. 1 cell phone maker in the world is showing off a conceptual cell phone design at theGSMA Mobile World Congress that is made of entirely renewable and recycled parts. The phone, called "Remade," was unveiled here during a keynote speech given by Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo on Tuesday.

The phone is being developed in Nokia's labs. And yesterday was the first time the thin, silver handset, had been shown publicly.

The device, which has an outer case made of renewable materials rather than petroleum-based plastic, doesn't yet make phone calls. And Nokia has not determined yet if it will actually manufacture the "Remade." But Kallasvuo said it showed what could be done with such materials and also gave insight into how Nokia thinks about its role in the global environment.

Sony Ericsson,Most Powerful Cyber-Shot Phone Yet

Set to debut with operator KDDI this March/April, the W61S is loaded with an extensive camera feature set that puts it almost on par with some midrange standalone cameras. Onboard are a 5.11-megapixel CMOS sensor (employing the same "Exmor" technology as the Sony Alpha dSLRs) and 3x optical zoom lens. In addition to anti-shake and autofocus, the camera-phone also comes with Kaokime Lite (auto brightness with face detection for natural skin tones) and Smile Shutter Lite (similar to the Smile Shutter for the
T200).

What's noteworthy about the W61S is that its cutting-edge features extend beyond its camera profile. For instance, it comes with onboard GPS which allows geotagging of images. A 2.8-inch WVGA (480×800) screen equipped with Bravia technology will also be something worth looking out for, not to mention a microSD card slot, Bluetooth, TV-out, LED flash and automatic lens cover. Unfortunately, the W61S will work on only CDMA 1XWIN networks supporting EV-DO Rev.A technology. So until a GSM version comes out, if it ever does, this remains pretty much a Japan-only handset for the rest of the Asia and the world to get green-eyed over.

Phone companies making mobiles out of water bottles

I think the environmental wave has been building for some time," says Olson, "and now, consumers believe it's real, it's important, and they're ready to start buying products that align with these values. But they're also smart: If you take a marginal product and stick a green label on it, it's not going to fool anyone. If, however, you have a really great product and it happens to be green, that sells. The key is to offer people something thoughtful and well-executed."
A lot of thought definitely went into the Renew, but it might have some stiff competition in Samsung's latest innovation, Blue Earth, a solar-powered touchscreen phone (unfortunately available only in the U. K.), which can generate enough electricity to make a call at any time using a mini-sheet of solar panels on the back. It's constructed from a plastic called PCM, also made from recycled water bottles.
Screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth can all be adjusted in a setting called "eco mode," and there's even something called an "eco walk" function that includes a built-in pedometer so users can calculate how much CO2 they've saved by not driving the car to work. Whether or not the phone will also feature built-in persuasive arguments to tackle such a dilemma each morning in the middle of winter, however, remains to be seen.
Previously, Samsung had released another green phone, simply called Eco, made from bioplastics, which are derived from corn and other plant materials instead of petroleum-based polycarbonates. Other than this and a water-based finishing coat, though, they basically just labelled it sustainable and called it a day.
Meanwhile, Nokia followed a similarly corny path with the Evolve, which features "bio-covers" made from over 50% renewable material. The main difference between the technology of this phone and the Renew or Blue Earth is that there are built-in alerts reminding users to unplug their chargers, and the chargers themselves are 94% more efficient.

Nokia 8800

The Nokia 8800 is now available throughout Europe in some language version.
Although it measures a distinctly petite 107 x 45 x 15 mm, and weighs 134 g, the Nokia 8800 looks even bigger although than it is the sliding design it adopts. The incredible 262,144 colors display is so bright and colorful, and provide more real colors of pictures and 3D images. The display resolution 208 x 208 pixel ideal for small and smart phone. The left side of the unit holds a spacious volume rocker, while on the other side we find a dedicated camera button. There is nice LEDs which notify users of new messages, active network and missed calls. This is not common for all Nokia handsets and is not necessary to pick up and activate the device to see whether any alerts are waiting.
In the WAN department, the 8800 boasts healthy support for Tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz, as well as HSCSD, GPRS (class 8), EDGE, SMS, and a range of applications such as WAP , Email client, Java MIDP 1.0, 64-channels polyphony, voice commands, a voice recorder, FAX/Modem, all of which laptop and handheld users will be pleased to learn is a breeze to utilize either by means of bluetooth high speed small range wireless device.

Nokia 8800 is a beautiful phone to hold and use, and it's quickly won our hearts. The typical Nokia design flair is present in abundance, with all the requisite consumer features to back it up.But love doesn't notice such little flaws.

SonyEricsson Z700

The SonyEricsson Z700 is now available throughout Europe in some language version.
Design
SonyEricsson's Z700 has a standard design for this class handsets, measuring 50 x 91 x 24 mm and 95 grams. Despite the weight it has a good feel in the hand, and the good shaped plastic body and styled highlights give it an attractive and nice look. The 256-color display unfortunately suffers from a very grainy appearance. The grainyness is not a problem when displaying text, however, just images - and due to the Z700 first and foremost being a color phone, this is less of a problem than it could have been. The display resolution 94 x 65 pixel is not very high but is normal for small phone like this. The left side of the unit holds a spacious volume rocker. There is nice LEDs which notify users of new messages, active network and missed calls. This is not common for all SonyEricsson handsets and is not necessary to pick up and activate the device to see whether any alerts are waiting.

Nokia fights to retain smartphone dominance

One of Nokia's thinnest phones to date, the 6500 Classic is just 9.5 millimeters thick. It offers 3G capability, quad-band reception (which means it will work on almost any wireless network in the world) and a micro-USB connector.
New market-share figures released by Gartner on 11 March indicate that the mighty Nokia is losing market share at the high end to Apple, RIM and HTC. No-one expects Nokia to tumble out of first place anytime soon, but the new competition is putting more pressure on the company to address some nagging issues such as improving its software and finally making its high-end products more available in the North American market.

T-Mobile USA Looks To Tap Consumers With Laptop Connection

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--T-Mobile USA is banking that casual users and small business owners will want a constant cellular connection for their laptop in unveiling its webConnect USB stickT-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG (DT), is entering a well-worn path. All of the other wireless carriers, which have built out more extensive high-speed networks, offer laptop cards with wireless Internet connections, and serve mostly business customers. Late to the game, the No. 4 U.S. carrier is hoping its ease of use and the targeting of consumers will allow it to grow.
"We're focusing on consumers and the next wave of users who adopt mobile broadband," said Jeremy Korst, the director of broadband products and services for T-Mobile. "We're making it easier."

The USB stick itself is $250, $100 with a one-year contract, or $50 with a two-year contract. The monthly plan costs $60 for 5 gigabytes of wireless data, with a charge of 20 cents per megabyte on top of that level. The $60 plan is roughly in line with competing services from other carriers.
Like AT&T's 3G card, T-Mobile's USB stick can connect to a majority of networks abroad. It can also connect to partner T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots overseas, but additional charges would apply.

The mobile death chamber means executions can be ordered and carried out by courts in towns and villages around a particular province, with executioners and medical staff shuttling between different jurisdictions. Authorities say the initiative is a deterrent against crime
China is innovating in the market of death with a fleet of execution buses in which convicts are efficiently and cleanly put to death by lethal injection.
"First, we established there was demand for execution vehicles. Then we designed the vehicles and applied to the government for certification. This procedure is a must," said Mr Zhang, from the marketing department of Jinguan Auto – a Chongqing-based maker of ambulances, police lorries, bulletproof shields and armour-plated limos. Mr Zhang, who did not wish to give his first name, said the execution bus is a refitted 17-seater minibus which is seven metres long. So far the company had sold 10 of the vehicles

Millions expected to cut back cell phone costs in recession

Opinion Research, which conducts polls for CNN and other organizations, also found that many users have already cut back. "The change in thinking and purchases is clearly already taking place and has been for months," said Graham Hueber, senior researcher for Opinion Research, in a call with reporters.
Thirty-nine percent of those customers with monthly contracts said they are likely to cut back. That percentage represents more than 60 million consumers who are expected to cut back on monthly service or extras such as texting, according to the Opinion Research Corp., a polling company that performed the survey for NMRC. The margin of error in the survey is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
Allen Hepner, a scholar at the NMRC, said the survey also shows that consumers will move from monthly cell phone plans to prepaid plans as a result of the downturn. He described four prepaid plans that were far less costly than monthly plans, putting them more in the reach of lower-income Americans. "Consumers are looking for savings," he said
Hepner would not say whether the NMRC receives funding from prepaid carriers, saying that the group's donors are kept anonymous. He did say that some of the donors are telecommunications companies. Many carriers offer both prepaid and monthly subscription plans.
